Rust in the fuel tank of the R107

An increasingly common problem with the Mercedes R107 SL is rust formation on the inside of the fuel tank. Even cars with low mileage are not exempt from this. Particularly in classic cars that stand still for extended periods, contamination and corrosion can develop in the fuel tank.

Rust in the fuel tank can completely contaminate fuel and injection system. Rust particles and other contaminants can end up in the fuel pump, pipes, fuel filter, and injection system, among other things.

Moreover, a fuel filter does not stop all very fine rust and dirt particles. Therefore, we recommend regularly checking the inside of the fuel tank for contamination and rust on an R107.

Fuel tank inspection

In our own garage, we inspect the inside of a fuel tank with a endoscope. Such a check is also possible via the opening of the tank float.

The fuel tank must be completely emptied for this. After removing the tank float, the inside of the tank can be inspected for rust, deposits, and other contamination through the opening.

NB: Gasoline and gasoline vapors are extremely flammable. Work exclusively in a well-ventilated area and keep fire, sparks, hot surfaces, and other ignition sources away. Always observe the prescribed safety measures when working on the fuel tank. If in doubt, we recommend having the inspection carried out by a qualified workshop.

Additional information

1. Check the entire fuel system for contamination and rust before installation.
2. If rust or contamination is present in the old tank, we advise carefully checking the fuel system and cleaning it if necessary.
3. When replacing a contaminated or rusted fuel tank, we recommend replacing the fuel filter as well.
4. When installing the new fuel tank, always replace the fuel tank strainer as well. Tank strainer A2014700406 is required for this.

6. Check the fuel hoses, connections, and seals and replace them if necessary.
7. During installation, ensure that no dirt gets into the new fuel tank or fuel lines.
8. Please note that contamination from a rusted tank may have spread further into the fuel and injection system. Therefore, replacing only the tank and the fuel filter is not always sufficient.
9. Preferably keep the fuel tank well filled during prolonged periods of inactivity. This ensures that less air and moisture remain in the tank, reducing the risk of condensation and, consequently, internal corrosion.
