Double-sided spark plug insertion aid – 240 mm

Double-sided spark plug insertion aid for safely and easily screwing in and removing spark plugs by hand, especially handy in hard-to-reach places.

This is such a simple tool that used to be found in almost every classic car workshop. We have also been using this spark plug insertion aid in our own workshop for years. Precisely because it is so simple and effective, we have included it in our webshop as well.

The flexible holder helps to the spark plug to screw straight into the cylinder head and thereby reduces the risk of misalignment and damage to the valuable threads in the cylinder head.

Especially for Mercedes V8 engines, where the spark plugs are sometimes difficult to access due to limited space, this is a practical tool.

Important assembly tips

1. Before removing the spark plug, carefully blow clean the area around the spark plug so that no dirt can fall into the cylinder.
2. Rotate a spark plug during installation always first by hand in. Use the spark plug insertion aid for this and check if the spark plug screws straight into the thread without resistance.
3. Never force a spark plug if it cannot be easily screwed in by hand.
4. Always check the correct electrode gap before installation.
5. Check every new spark plug for possible damage from a drop. A dropped spark plug may be damaged without this being immediately visible on the outside.
6. Next, tighten the spark plug to the torque prescribed for the specific engine and spark plug.
7. A spark plug should preferably not be installed more than twice. After that, we recommend replacement.

Spark plug tightening torque

Mercedes specifies different tightening torques for various engines and spark plug seat types:

1. M102 and M103 engine with conical seat spark plugs – 10 to 20 Nm
2. Older engines with flat-seat spark plugs, including M100, M125, M127, M130, M110, M116, M117 and M123 engines – 25 to 30 Nm
3. M104, M111, M112, M113, M119 and M137 motor – 28 Nm
4. M166.940, M166.960 and M166.990 engine – 25 Nm

Please note: the torque specifications above are guidelines. Before installation, always check which torque Mercedes prescribes for the specific engine version, cylinder head, and spark plug type used. The type of spark plug seat – flat or conical – is also important in this regard.

Replacing spark plugs can be a tricky job, especially on V8 engines, due to the limited space. Screwing them in carefully and straight is important to prevent costly damage to the threads in the cylinder head.
